ISLAMABAD – The federal cabinet of the PML-N-led coalition government grew to 83 members on Wednesday as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed five more special assistants, putting more strain on the already-stressed economy.
Rao Ajmal Khan, Malik Sohail Khan, Shaista Pervaiz Malik, Chaudhry Hamid Hameed, and Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh have been added to the premier’s cabinet, making it the biggest in the country’s history.
With the addition of five additional special assistants to the prime minister, the cabinet currently includes 38 federal ministers, seven ministers of state, four advisors to the prime minister, and 34 SAPMs. All five have been accorded the position of state minister despite not being allocated a portfolio.
Given the prevailing economic turbulence, where foreign currency reserves have dropped to an alarming low, inflation has surged, and peace and order is worsening, expanding the cabinet is unwarranted since it would cost the national coffers in terms of allowances and bonuses.
