ISLAMABAD : As the Supreme Court (SC) took suo motu notice of the situation, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponed its meeting to discuss the announcement of the election dates in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Those familiar with the situation said that the election watchdog would now argue against President Arif Alvi’s directives before the supreme court.

There seems to be a “lack of clarity,” according to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, about the delay in conducting elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday.

It is important to note that the suo motu notice comes two days after President Dr. Arif Alvi declared April 9 as the date for conducting elections in both provinces unilaterally on Monday after the Election Commission of Pakistan declined his call for talks on the topic (ECP).
