An anti-terrorism court in Bahawalpur sentenced 22 people to five years in prison for vandalising a Hindu temple in Rahim Yar Khan’s Bhong area.
On the basis of the benefit of the doubt, ATC judge Nasir Hussain acquitted 62 others involved in the case.
In August 2021, a frenzied crowd assaulted a Hindu temple in Bhong after an eight-year-old Hindu kid was granted free after being accused with blasphemy for urinating in a madrassa.
Police detained 84 persons in connection with the temple attack.
The culprits in the case were arrested by police, but two months later, a jirga supported by the province administration assisted inhabitants of Karak district and representatives of the Hindu community in reaching an agreement to address the concerns.
The attackers apologised to the Hindu community for vandalising their shrine. The Hindu community accepted their apologies and informed the jirga that they would work with them on all problems, including the release of those accused of damaging the shrine.
On the occasion of Diwali, the shrine was renovated and reopened.
