SLAMABAD – For defecting from the PTI, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has deseated 25 dissident PTI Punjab MPAs.
The 25 dissident PTI members against whom the disqualification reference was filed include Raja Sagheer Ahmed, Malik Ghulam Rasool Sangha, Saeed Akbar Khan, Mohammad Ajmal, Abdul Aleem Khan, Nazir Ahmed Chohan, Mohammad Amin Zulqernain, Malik Nauman Langrial, Mohammad Salman, Zawar Hussain Warraich, Nazir Ahmed Khan, Fida Hussain, Zahra Batool, Mohammad Tahir, Aisha Nawaz, Sajida Yousaf, Haroon Imran Gill, Uzma Kardar, Malik Asad Ali, Ijaz Masih, Mohammad Sabtain Raza, Mohsin Atta Khan Khosa, Mian Khalid Mehmood, Mehar Mohammad Aslam and Faisal Hayat.
During the last session, the lawyers representing the dissident members of the provincial assembly said that the MPAs were uninformed of the parliamentary party’s directives to vote for Pervaiz Elahi for Punjab’s chief minister.
“By taking the defence and saying they were not aware of parliamentary party directives regarding who to vote for in the election of the chief minister when the whole globe and the nation knew about it,” PTI counsel Syed Ali Zafar stated.
“To suggest that the MPAs were awake but sleeping all this time because it was being debated on talk shows and printed in the press,” he continued.
The counsel claimed that a meeting of the parliamentary party was held on April 1, and the decision was published the next day in the press, that the chief whip issued notices to all MPAs in the Punjab Assembly on April 2, and another notice was sent on April 4 by PTI General Secretary Asad Umar, that another meeting was held in April, and the same decision was reached, and that a third notice was sent on April 7.
It should be noted that the provincial MPs indicated above voted in support of Hamza Shahbaz in the election of Punjab Chief Minister. He obtained 197 votes, when a simple majority of 186 votes is necessary. Hamza has lost his majority since these 25 provincial MPs are no longer in the House.
